The Great A-Z fashion Terms

Today I am flying back home for a couple of weeks, I am very excited. Therefore I woke up at 5 AM without the ability to go back to sleep, this is what happen when I wake up so early! Here I represent to you a glossary of fashion the I gathered from my last semester at FIT in addition to Vogue Magazine.

A line: A dress/ skirt shape that is narrower at the top and gently flaring out to the bottom, following the shape of the letter A. Flattering for bottom heavy figures

Boxy: Square in shape with minimal tailoring

Capris: Knee to calf length straight cut pants. Chandelier Earrings: Long shoulder-dusting earrings incorporating crystals and 
beads lending them the look of chandeliers

Design: Particular or individual interpretation, version or treatment of a style

Epaulets: A decorative shoulder adornment

Fad (mini fashion): Fashion that suddenly sweeps into popularity, affecting a limited part of the total population, and then quickly disappears

Gaiter: A piece of fabric worn over the shoe, extending to the ankle or the knee

Haute Couture: High fashion, hand made, staggeringly expensive one of a kind pieces that often require three fittings. To qualify as an haute couture piece a garment must follow several strict guidelines. For a label or business to qualify as a couture house it must belong to the Syndical Chamber for Haute Couture in Paris

Iridescent: The property of a fabric that appears to change color as it catches the light

Jouy Print: A white or off-white background on which a repeated pattern, depicting a detailed scene, appears

Kimono: A Japanese garment. The kimono sleeve is a wide sleeve cut in one piece with the main body of the garment

LBD or the Little Black Dress: A black cocktail dress that has become a fashion staple after being first introduced by Coco Channel. Reinvented every season

Minimalism: A trend in design where clothes are stripped down to their most basic elements. A look characterized by simple forms and basic color schemes. A minimalist look

Necklines: The most popular necklines are the V-neck, square neck, round neck, boat neck, scooped neck, halter and keyhole

Ombré: A gradual change of one shade from dark to light (also referred to as degradé)

Prêt-a-porter: A French term for ready to wear. A lower and more popular price point for garments from most design houses

Ruching: Creating gathers in cloth by pulling it between two or more lines of stitching. Also known as shirring

Silhouette: Key shapes a designer uses in his show. Popular silhouettes are A-line, H-line, Bell shaped, Empire line, etc

Trend: General direction or movement. Designers make trendy clothes that are sold to retailers, and fashion forward consumers wear them

Vintage: A trend in fashion now that references designs and other details from bygone eras from the 1920's unto the 70's

Unitard: A skin-tight garment that covers the body from the neck to the wrists and ankles

Wrap: Both wraparound tops and wraparound 
skirts involve overlapping fabric around the waist, either in the front or the back to create a fitted waistline

X-ray Fabrics: Sheer fabrics with a translucent effect

Yoke: The part of the garment around the neckline on the front and the back
Zardozi: Traditional Mughal embroidery, done with metallic thread and uncut stones on heavy fabrics such as velvet and silk. A favorite with bridal collections
